Emissions reduction

EMISSIONS REDUCTION

WHETHER IN PRODUCTION, TRANSPORT OR OUR COOLING EQUIPMENT, WE ACTIVELY WORK ON REDUCING CO2 FOOTPRINT

We are committed to contributing fighting climate change, reducing impact of our operations, primarily through sustainable energy use. Our approach entails improvement of energy efficiency, transferring to cleaner energy sources and development of new low-carbon technologies, thus, 100% of energy used in our plants comes from renewable sources.

In 2021, we are committed to achieving zero carbon dioxide emissions across our entire value chain by 2040. Our roadmap to achieving zero emissions starts from the baseline year of 2017, which serves as the foundation for our science-based targets.

Direct emissions (Scope 1 + 2) constitute 3% of our total emissions, with the largest share here being emissions from our fleet and bottling facilities.

WE REDUCE EMISSIONS FROM TRANSPORT

The most significant environmental impacts associated with the internal and external transport of our products are fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.

Both parameters, along with distance traveled, are monitored for all vehicles in the Coca-Cola HBC Serbia fleet, which consist of light passenger vehicles. Since 2008, liquid petroleum gas devices have been installed in company-owned vehicles, and all new vehicles purchased immediately receive liquid petroleum gas devices.

We are reducing emissions by changing the transportation we use for our products, prioritizing suppliers who choose to use more sustainable fuels. In 2023, Coca-Cola HBC Serbia replaced an additional 8 diesel trucks with trucks powered by compressed natural gas (CNG) and liquefied natural gas (LNG) compared to 2022. By the end of 2023, we had 15 CNG trucks, and in this way, together with our partners, we reduced CO2 emissions by 477 tons for the year!

TRANSITION TO CLEANER ENERGY

Energy production has a significant impact on emissions, so our approach involves transitioning to cleaner energy sources, improving energy efficiency, and developing new low-carbon technologies.

INDIRECT EMISSIONS

Approximately 97% of emissions are generated from sources outside our control, within the value chain. The largest share of indirect emissions comes from the production of raw materials, followed by packaging and refrigeration equipment. Therefore, it is crucial for us to collaborate closely with our suppliers and partners.

The refrigeration equipment we use for selling our products at customer premises accounts for about one-third of Coca-Cola HBC Serbia's total CO2 emissions. We have continued to invest in more energy-efficient refrigeration units. By regularly replacing refrigeration units with energy-efficient models in 2023, we reduced CO2 emissions by 9,000 tons compared to 2022.
